I have an Asus ROG PC I got for VR, I just got it up to date for the first time in a couple years. I always have my computer hooked up to my TV to watch things on. My laptop never had an issue, I can’t find what is causing this effect, I made a recording of it:

Sylvie has been NO help at all!!

Have you tried a different HDMI cable (I’m assuming that’s how it is hooked up)? I have seen these kind of issues fixed sometimes with a higher quality cable. Not going overboard with super expensive ones, but the cheapest of the cheap often cause more headaches than the savings are worth. Middle of the road cables are the best, lol.

My own living room PC had been having weird glitches as well, including some that looked like this. Upgraded the HDMI cable to a $15 one instead of some $5 one (that claimed the same specs and capabilities). And no more glitching.

If it was working all correctly before though, you could try rolling back to older driver versions for the graphics card and see if that fixes it. You can often download the older versions from Nvidia/AMD websites.

Driver issue or cable are possible....does it do it on the computer’s own screen as well? If it does that on both all the time, then it may be a bad sign of the video card dying...weird pixels and lines and color changes and the like such as you’ve shown are called ‘artifacting’ - usually caused by video card failure, or sometimes just caused by overheating:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Visual_artifact#In_video_entertainment

The ROG is a gaming laptop. Does it have auto GPU overclocking features, or have you set it to overclock? Overclocking can often kill GPUs in laptops.

Sometimes an effect like that is caused by the video player (if you’re watching rips of movies or something like that) . If you’re just watching Netflix or something, then it’s likely a driver issue as stated below.

I’ve only seen stuff like that with an overclocked video card, but I don’t think that’s what you have. It’s non-uniform, clearly situat ed in the dark areas of the image. Start by grabbing the newest drivers. If it still persists, swap the cable. If you have HDR on, try turning it off (right-click on the desktop, select display settings, and then see if you have a Windows HD Color section).

Hmm I did try to install the Nvidia control center or whatever and it said I needed to update Java and they gave me a link. So I did that and it asks me to update Java again like it never happened. I guess I will try to go to the Nvidia site. The cable is one I took from a show, we have the good stuff and it never had a problem before, just started the day I changed computers, must be a driver etc.. I will keep trying to update it, thanks!

I work on shows, not AV but rigging, the cable is one I took from a show, we have the good stuff and it never had a problem before, this just started the day I changed computers, must be a driver etc.. I will try going to Nvidia, the update program on the computer keeps asking me to update java and I did, but it still asks.

Well I haven’t set it to overclock, would they come like that? It only happens on my TV. I’ve been trying to install the Nvidia control center program that lets you look at everything easily.

Sounds like you’re OK...artifacting with a card dying would usually display on both monitors, not just one. I’d check the cable and the drivers. Could also be physical issue with the HDMI port?

I updated it direct from Nvidia, it worked. I still see the issue a little, but it seems better. I tried to install the Nvidia GeForce Experience control thing and it says can’t register now, try again later?! WTF? I read some of these do come with AI overclocking and you can turn that off in BIOS, I forget how to do that. It’s not that bad right now, if it goes back to being worse I will get more serious I guess. Hopefully the Nvidia thing lets me register and I can look at everything in a nice easy program. I have two HDMI that are meant for certain things and I have four of those other video ports and I have adaptors. It could be the adaptor but it’s new, I had another old one but I can’t find it. Mahalo brah, Thanks!

No problemo! Glad it’s better than it was at least...yeah, I was thinking of the factory auto-overclocking feature some laptops come with. If it were mine, I would disable it as more life out of the GPU is more important to me than slightly better visuals. :)

I have no idea how to do it, people just say go into BIOS but don’t say how. So far the Nvidia program won’t let me register and the Nvidia help chat has me on hold forever. This says:

AI suite is a software you installed, Changing the BIOS will do little since the AI suite changes the OC setting only with you in windows.

you can set it to default in the Dual intelligent processors 5 then go to TPU and hit DEFAULT ,it should have you reboot and it will load the CPU oc back to normal.

Huh, that’s referencing a CPU overclock rather than GPU overclock...

There should be something somewhere in the Nvidia settings for a GPU overclock if there is one?

Alright. I read you made some progress already. I’d still suggest trying another cable to or rule it out. O r jiggling the cable in the HDMI port a bit, if it gets better or worse you can probably rule out any strange overclocking artefacts from the graphics card.

I actually remember seeing this exact issue on my old Surface Pro 3 when I was using it’s mini DisplayPort out. Moving the cable around a bit would make it less or worse. I ended up replacing the adapter/cable combo and it solved it.

Oh I stopped using my Toshiba Satellite , I switched to an Asus ROG G20 ( think there are a few versions of them) PC that I got for VR but then the VR gave me headaches so I shelved it and sold the HTC Vive. It’s a few years old but way more powerful than my Laptop.

I don’t have another cable that will reach, that’s why I took this one from work! But I’m not working these days. It does have a bunch of display ports, I have an adapter for the cable. I changed where it was plugged in and I updated Nvidia. It does seem to be better, I see a little bit but I’m not going to get crazy over it I guess. This just happened when I changed computers so I doubt it’s the cable but it could be the adapter since it’s a new piece of the puzzle or one of the four display ports was not as good as another. This PC was only used for a couple weeks and then boxed up, so who knows. I put on a relief support for the cable like we do on truss above stuff on shows so the weight of the cable doesn’t break the connector. I am not AV, I just get the big stuff in the air, but I always look for stuff that could go wrong during a show. I’m not totally useless with a computer but I don’t get very deep into real tricky problems. I guess I will live with a little pixel here and there, unless it gets a lot worse, thanks!

Well now it seems to be back and I even get some sound interruption . If I’m online and I load something like a page of pictures I think it effects it. I thought this computer was pretty powerful. I got this program to check some things but I don’t know what it means.

Back all of those sliders to off, if possible. Your video performance may suffer a tiny bit, but to me, longevity is more important!

Ok it let me do that, crazy how hot you could make this thing if you wanted, it’s a strangely shaped computer, heat goes out the top.

Kinja'd!!!

I ordered a new cable that needs no adapter, it goes from DP to HDMI. People were saying the TV refresh rate must be compatible with the settings but I don’t know. The screen was blacking out for a split second last night and sound would do it as well separately. I will see if the cable has any effect in a couple days. Would RAM help? I swapped 32G into my laptop before and this one is 16G stock, but you can swap it to 32?

Kinja'd!!!0

You could put 32GB in it, but 16GB should be more than enough for most ‘normal’ stuff like video playback.

Heat out the top isn’t too uncommon, though most cases are designed with MOST heat to go out the back. My current custom build PC Case and my old HTPC case both have fans/’blowhole’ vents on top for air to escape that way as well.

If sound AND video is cutting out, that still makes me think it could be a driver, cable or port issue. You’ve updated the drivers and that made no difference though, so we’ll see if the cable does anything.

You could also try wiping all the video drivers completely and BACKDATING them to an older version than you had when this started to see if that makes any difference...?

To clarify, is the TV the only ‘monitor’ connected to the machine ..? If so, did you try connecting it to a different HDMI port on the TV side and/or on the back of the video card and see if the issue persists?

I have one old style pin monitor port not in use , four DP and one HDMI in the back of the computer. The HDMI must be for something specific because it doesn’t work for the TV, it’s off to the side away from the others, maybe for the VR stuff . I have tried the different DP with the HDMI adapter and it’s all the same. My regular monitor is plugged in the a DP because it has that plug and it works fine with video. So the TV is in the same DP plugs. So either it is the cable or the refresh or something I read might be on the wrong setting. It’s on 60 and I tried 30 like a post said and that was worse. If the new cable is the same I’m going to return it and I guess we will have to try the driver backdating. I just watched a DS9 episode and I saw almost no issues, last night I watched some TV episodes and it had the other issues I mentioned that never happened before that day. I can’t explain the inconsistency either.
